Crazy About Older Homes

Something I’ve always appreciated about the finely kept more historical homes that Traverse City proper is known for is the detail that most newer builds don’t have. The brick paved path leading to the front door, the wood floor and wood paneled ceiling of the porch, the cast door handles, or the living room with an extra nook that refuses to be a boring square box. These are details that assure us real hands worked on the place and those hands belonged to highly skilled tradespeople who cared. I love that this is a home with actual rooms. Many of them. Whomever declared “open-concept living” to be desirable, in my opinion, was a snake oil salesman. I think we actually long for a variety of unique spaces to contain and even give shape to our various moods and activities. Some rooms call us together and others welcome us into much needed alone-time. Think of a goldfish in its plain glass bowl. Add a bit of plastic grass and a miniature rock cave for it to tuck into and all of a sudden we all feel happier. These historic homes are criticized sometimes for needing more upkeep than our open-concept boxes, but they take care of us in return ten-fold.
